CAPSULE COURSE: HOW TO AVOID ROOKIE MISTAKES ( FOR EMERGING POETS)

$50

Online and asynchronous. Can start anytime.

Getting a foot in the door as a poet can be daunting, and there are plenty of people out there that will tell you all kinds of conflicting and confusing information.

This quick course covers some very easy-to-fix issues that beginning poets often make when they start submitting their work for the first time, and will help you clean up your drafts, keeping an eye on those small (but super relevant) parts of your writing that will boost your attention to detail. In addition to these tips and provided examples, easily worked through in a few hours but endlessly useful, it will elevate your poetry instantly, and be applicable to everything you might want to send out into the world. Purchase also includes a page of notes on a single poem of your choice.

Note: This course is asynchronous, and you can work at your own pace, but there is no live component. Joanna is available via email or contact form with any questions or concerns.

CAPSULE COURSE: DIALOGUE AND POINT OF VIEW - FRENEMIES OR BFFLS?

$200

Online and asynchronous. Can start anytime.

Dialogue.
We want to hear our characters’ voices, because without them, they’re not real to us, they’re not much more than words on a page. Without dialogue we don’t have the animating force that propels our stories forward, and without that animating force, we don’t have much at all.

This course isn’t just walking you through the ways to make characters sound like real people—it’s going to break down the way dialogue and point-of-view interact, and how these two elements of story work together to make stronger prose, if they’re working the way they should be. With six lessons, and four short bonus assignments/writing prompts, this course will look at contemporary writing you’re likely familiar with, using examples from Stephen King to George Saunders to F. Scott Fitzgerald to Rachel Kushner to Jen Silverman, taking on dialogue with broad strokes. Looking at all kinds of writers and their speakers, going down to the nuts and bolts, you’ll learn exactly how it all works, and you can go through all of it at your own pace, asking questions via at any time.

Note: This course is asynchronous, and you can work at your own pace, but there is no live component. Joanna is available via email or contact form with any questions or concerns.
